01-05-08 / 17:06 : Bench of imac 3,06Ghz / G4 (cjed)
Engadget provides a full review of the new imac 3,06 Ghz (Penryn, not the same Core 2 Duo as with the previous imacs generation).
Comparison tests made with Xbench on a G4 MDD 1,25Ghz give : the imac is more than 3 times faster than the G4 in processor tests (hopefully, as the imac cumulated cores power is close to 6Ghz. The G4 is however faster than the 1,6Ghz MacBook Air for FFT calculations, thanks to its altivec unit), 7 times faster in threads management, 5 times faster in memory tests, more than 3 times faster in 2D (Quartz) graphics, 3 times faster in OpenGL tests (the 1,6Ghz MacBook Air and 2,2Ghz MacBook, fitted with an Intel GMA chipset, are however respectively 4 and 3 times slower in OpenGL - then in games - than the G4 with its old Radeon 9000 Pro from 2002).

For user interface test under Leopard, the G4 can't however catch up : it is close to 20 times slower than the new imac (even the MacBook Air is 5 times faster than the G4) ! Only disk tests keep the G4 from being the worst performer in all categories (It even beats all Apple MacBook, Pro included, but not the imacs). Even considering the Radeon 9000 Pro that prevents the G4 from performing at its full potential under Leopard, it seems clear Apple did optimize the system for Intel architecture mainly.
