28-06-08 / 16:39 : X-Plane 9 on OSX : 3 times slower / VISTA et Linux (cjed) | Through a forum about Xplane (where some people remember the Oric), we learn that on a MacPro with GeForce 8800GT performances (framerate) of X-Plane 9 are 2,5 lower on OSX (10.5.2) than on Windows VISTA (we can imagine even better results on XP), and even 3 times lower than on Linux (Ubuntu 8.04). Nvidia OSX drivers are directly putted as the cause. In fact a game like World of Warcraft is a bit faster on OSX than on Windows. So X-Plane problems can be due to the use of some OpenGL instructions that aren't well managed by Nvidia driver on OSX, so this could be only an inefficient combination.
Moreover globally the 8800GT driver is said to be the worse made by Nvidia - also on VISTA - (ATI drivers are more famous, notably their performances are higher in 2D and 3D applications). Finally some cards perform better depending on the underlying 3D engine used by the game : Unreal Engine, Quake engine, Doom Engine, etc. (Nvidia and ATI have each their best performer, not the same, but none perform well with both engines families). The tricks used to accelerate 3D rendering (that is mainly masqued triangles calculations) are closer and closer to hacks, that in some context lead to unwanted counter-performance (or display bugs/artefacts). In that area we can remember the 3dfx cards that provided the best perspective perception and best textures filtering/dithering algorithm with the Unreal 1 engine. Later Radeon and Nvidia weren't that best on this task (less convincing result).
