26-08-06 / 13:47 : Zune : not exciting / iPod domination (cjed)
Through Macbidouille we learn that Le Nouvel Observateur posted a news (originated from Reuters) about the upcoming Microsoft Zune. This portable music player, due to the end of the year, will finally be manufactured by Toshiba. It will feature an (only) 3 inches splay (2,5 for the "now old" iPods), only 30 Go hard disk, and a Wifi connexion. Microsoft should unveil more details next weeks.

After Creative left this market (more or less buyed by Apple...), and Dell doing the same now, it is unclear how Microsoft will try to compete. Besides Apple will celebrate next october the fifth year of the iPod ! It has 75% market shares (NPD survey), far more than half so. Never seen before, as in other areas - computing for example -, the leader HP/Compaq has less than 20% market share (5% for Apple). We have huge expectations for Apple upcoming announce about the next iPod revamp (probably around the anniversary day).

Meanwhile we can watch again the original video of the iPod introdction in 2001 at iPod Fanatic (and see the famous jeans and pullover of S. Jobs :), or read the very instructive Saga de l'ipod written by Daniel Ichbiah, where we learn a lot about the iPod genese and AAC format. In his site (he is an occasional editor at SVM Mac) we can see the huge list of books he wrote (more than 60, mainly in music area), and some of its musical compositions.

Effectivement les travaux de l'écrivain D. Ichbiah ont l'air passionants. Et pour cause, les sujets traîtés sont toute notre jeunesse, pour la plupart ! Je devrais peut-être lire SVM plus souvent ;)
