As for the iPhone 1 Orange asked subscription to an iPhone specific contract, between 49 and 149 euros, the device price with a two years contract is 408 euros min (49-32 * 24 if you had previously a 32 euros monthly fee) ! So it is higher than the price without subscription (about 400 euros), and even more considering that the 99$ price will probably require the most costly contract (that leads to 500 euros).
