04-09-05 / 20:21 : x86 VS PPC / Linux VS OSX (cjed) | AnandTech publishes a very detailed and objective article that manage to explain differences between x86 and PPC platforms (in terms of performance, notably in the Intel transition perspective), and to provide some early explanations to performance gap between Linux and OSX on the same hardware, for specific tasks. Then we learn that Apple fixed a problem in the OSX networking code, where FreeBSD user threads where used in place of faster kernel threads (now used in Tiger). So Apple is aware of backwards inherited from the OSX multiple system layer architecture - however necessarily for compatibility purposes with Carbon, Cocoa and BSD (Mach task --> BSD task --> Carbon task). | | Comments | Write a comment | |
