05-20-06 / 12:16 PM : CodeWeavers CrossOver vs BootCamp & Parallels (cjed)
We now have at our disposal 3 solutions to run Windows applications on Intel Macs : BootCamp (restart needed, better preformances - better for games - but more painful, more risky because of virus, needs a copy of Windows and a dedicated partition), Parallels Workstation (easier to manage - no restart, safer, also require a Windows licence plus the software cost, few informations about games performances) and CodeWeavers CrossOver (doesn't require buying Windows but less compatible, notably the Windows applications instalation procedure is made out of Windows, because the software is aimed to replace Windows...).
These three solutions - not finalised (alpha for CrossOver, beta for BootCamp, Release Candidate 1 for Workstation) - are presented in this article. To note, Windows images coming from VirtualPC do not allow booting over BootCamp.

05-19-06 / 01:02 PM : Creative : Apple strikes back the looser (cjed)
This week the small mp3 portable players manufacturer Creative (value of less than 500 M$, whereas Apple has 9 billions in cash - not mentioning its value...) sued the later about a patent, surprinsingly desposited last summer, 5 years after the introduction of the first ipod...
Even without considering the fact that with this patent all music softwares are illegal, we must remind the column based navigation system inherited from MacOSX (2000), that came from NextStep (late 80's), and even from the Appe Lisa (1982) !
The true reason is that Creative needs money : its share lost 25 percents last three months (ipod success is lasting long), so they need attention and cash to try to catch up with the leader. The problem for them is that they will lose in every case : through bankrupkt if Apple decides to make the procedure last, or after the lawsuit Apple deposited some days after against Creative, saying Creative violated 4 of Apple's patents.

Even when looking at this picture from a Creative player, the copy of ipod photo interface is obvious. But finally, most important is, as Microsoft has a lot of problems trying to copy the first MacOSX user interface from 2000, Creative can't catch up in terms of design, software and audio quality for its portable players.

During the review of the DADVSI law at the french Sénat, the article upon required strong interoperability has been removed. That is a victory for Apple, that consolidates its leadership. In fact, Fnac, Virgin and Sony Music did worse, as their services aren't compatibles with Macs.s

05-09-06 / 11:12 PM : Music : donationware (cjed)
The site Génération Nouvelles Technologies presents an interesting idea, a donationware payment like system for musicians on internet. With this principle there is 3 possibilities when downloading a song : pay nothing, pay immediately or pay after what you want. In Canada, a singer would have tried that system and would have gained an average 1,14 $ per song, much more than from a recording company (1 to 2 % of the profits).
Would be cool if integrated to musique-libre.org ? :-)

05-07-06 / 02:15 PM : OSX 10.5 Leopard : advanced multithreading (cjed)
As reported from Macosrumors, Apple worked with Intel to improve multitasking in MacOSX, using the new features from the Intel core chips. The Mach kernel always uses the porwerful symetric multiprocessing principle, however beyond four processor cores the number of application threads to manage may be too small to fill all of the available processor units... So the new mean will divide further the processes, even if they weren't a lot of multitasking coded in the programs.

As reported Macnn, Apple may be interested in integrating into OSX the new ZFS filesystem developed by Sun. Based upon a transactionnal object model, it gets rid of old constraints encountered for 20 years, offers a huge performance gain, and adds powerful integrity checks and correction, also being endian scheme independant.
