11-29-06 / 12:38 AM : Zune : wrong start, null impact (cjed)
Microsoft Zune launch seems to have failed (numerous defaults - see also this review). It felt in sales charts after a week and is ten times less recommanded than ipods (or remains unknown). Analysts predict zero impact on ipod sales, and Apple stock quote should reach the 100$ line.
Meanwhile Google predicted a media revolution thanks to the ipod.s

11-24-06 / 08:31 PM : Apple : the stock quote beats records (cjed)
With a stock quote now around 92$, nothing seems able to stop its progression. One of the reasons is the ipod shuffles sales that are stunning. Promotions announced today by Apple will certainly encourage the tendance. We can expect a split of shares next days.

11-21-06 / 08:45 PM : Leopard : Mandatory Access Control (cjed)
At macgeneration, in a news about theoric vulnerability with automatic image mount feature in Safari (disabled by default), we learn that Apple is working on the well known Unix question of rights escalation. Their solution is to fix for applications the list of system operations they are allowed to execute in normal use :
"Leopard brings several new security enhancements to Mac OS X. The first of these is the adoption of the Mandatory Access Control (MAC) framework. This framework, original developed for TrustedBSD, provides a fine-grained security architecture for controlling the execution of processes at the kernel level. This enables sandboxing support in Leopard. By sandboxing an application, using a text profile, you can limit an application to being able to just access only the system features, such as disk or the network, that you permit."

At more than 88$, Apple stock is beating records. Reasons are multiple : rumors about work with AMD, the planned release of the iphone, expected new features not yet unveiled for Leopard, ipod 6G and touchscreen patent, expectations around iTV.

11-20-06 / 11:22 PM : Zune : no impact on Apple domination (cjed)
First sales indications (Amazon, etc.) lead to think that the Zune will not hurt ipod domination, that weights 75% marketshare in US. Moreover macosrumors announced that 6G ipod will change everything, even improving now familiar things. It is yet unknown if new ipods will onboard a light version of MacOSX.s

Le Monde has released a pessimistic article about the discovery of a security flaw in most computers in the world, because of the processors used for coding data. At least it reminds me the cryptography courses, which is quite difficult topic !

11-17-06 / 10:34 PM : Zune review : not even as good as ipod (cjed)
The famous site ArsTechnica provides a review of the Zune. Without surprise it isn't and will not be a serious alternative to actual ipods (and even less for the next ones). Although Microsoft took Apple ideas/patents (scrollwheel of the ipod, iTunes look for its bundled synchronisation software - not Windows Media Player !) the Zune doesn't bring really new feature nor even the same quality as actual ipods :
- looks like the ipod but is deeper and bigger, and less cute (made of simplier materials),
- a bit bigger screen with exactly the same resolution, so less bright,
- less good sounding (at least less good headphones), no support for variable bitrate encoding, some bugs in encoding,
- no support for formats with DRM (Fairplay songs buyed on the iTMS, and even Windows DRM are not compatible !),
- bugs in synchronisation software, less rich interface, very small titles catalog,
- limited battery life (14h),
- poor inspiring WiFi technology,
- no possibility to use the player as an external hard drive !

11-07-06 / 08:49 PM : OSX : 5% of surfers, 4% for Safari, still no virus (cjed)
Net Applications reported that 5% of net surfers use a Mac, with 4% from Safari (progression of 1% in a year), that is a great score, just behind Firefox and IE. And still no virus on Mac... not that the installed base is small (virus makers would be proud to produce the first virus for Mac/Unix) but simply because they can't without asking to enter the admin/root Unix password.

11-03-06 / 07:04 PM : MacBook Pro Core Duo 2 VS Core Duo (cjed)
Macs Only provides a comparison between the new MacBookPro Core Duo 2 and the old Core Duo. Even considering the higher frequency (2,33Ghz for the new one, versus 2,16 Ghz) the difference in performances is great. And the new Macbook Pro is cooler. That is here.
