Presented as the key announcement of the day, Eric Schmidt, Google CEO, would join Apple administration board (a company he "admires"). Among historic members is Oracle CEO, but some think the new member could be a potential leader if S. Jobs should stop due to health problems.

Macosrumors reveals there should be soon a 10.4.8 update for Tiger. It would be the biggest update ever, and would bring huge performance boost (among updated applications is expected DVDPlayer). More interesting, Core Duo processors would allow great monitoring possibilities, and even overclocking through software.

The Radeon X1900XT upgrade cost for Mac Pro is 100$ down to 250$ at Apple Store US (also for the standalone version of the card). That is, with 2 Go Ram (1 Go added) the total price is 3000$ for the most powerful computer ever (under OSX and Windows), the best design, and less noisy machine in its category.

08-26-06 / 01:47 PM : Zune : not exciting / iPod domination (cjed)
Through Macbidouille we learn that Le Nouvel Observateur posted a news (originated from Reuters) about the upcoming Microsoft Zune. This portable music player, due to the end of the year, will finally be manufactured by Toshiba. It will feature an (only) 3 inches splay (2,5 for the "now old" iPods), only 30 Go hard disk, and a Wifi connexion. Microsoft should unveil more details next weeks.

After Creative left this market (more or less buyed by Apple...), and Dell doing the same now, it is unclear how Microsoft will try to compete. Besides Apple will celebrate next october the fifth year of the iPod ! It has 75% market shares (NPD survey), far more than half so. Never seen before, as in other areas - computing for example -, the leader HP/Compaq has less than 20% market share (5% for Apple). We have huge expectations for Apple upcoming announce about the next iPod revamp (probably around the anniversary day).

Meanwhile we can watch again the original video of the iPod introdction in 2001 at iPod Fanatic (and see the famous jeans and pullover of S. Jobs :), or read the very instructive Saga de l'ipod written by Daniel Ichbiah, where we learn a lot about the iPod genese and AAC format. In his site (he is an occasional editor at SVM Mac) we can see the huge list of books he wrote (more than 60, mainly in music area), and some of its musical compositions.

08-26-06 / 01:30 PM : MP3 players : Dell stops (cjed)
After having stopped production of hard disks based music players last february (to focuse on flash based music players market, hoping less concurrence here from Apple), Dell finally has decided to stop production of all of its music players. So exit the DJ Jitty, Dell will refocus on its core market, computers. The problem now is (ever) Apple, that sells high end PCs (Mac Pro), 30% cheaper than Dell's...

08-24-06 / 10:54 PM : Windows VISTA : soon but not ready (cjed)
Just some months before the shipment of Windows VISTA, it seems the system (Beta 2) is still plagued with bugs, lacks stability, and requires huge memory resources (700 Mo, three times the amount required by XP). The author thinks there should be a Beta 3 instead launch. All that for a system without any innovation... still behind what MacOS X beta offered in 2000. Analysts expect few people to switch (less than half), most will wait over a year. Moreover there is numerous softwares incompatibilities, and notably custom party drivers problems.

08-24-06 / 10:32 PM : Apple/Creative : Apple pays, Creative comes to iPod (cjed)
Apple finally choosed to pay 100M$ (it is huge but Apple earns 5 times that in a quarter) to Creative for using its "patent that isn't really one" about the ipod navigation interface (the ipod was out years before Creative thought about that). Apple will even be able to gain money back if Creative succeeds in stoling other companies, using the same methods as with Apple. The most funny thing is that Creative is really leaving the music player competition, as with the settled agreement they also gained... the "Made for ipod" certification from Apple, that is they will produce accessories for iPod !

Very logical ! That was the only mean for Creative not to sell down. Finally Apple avoided the probably more costly buy of the whole company, and will grow easily its market shares.

08-14-06 / 11:41 PM : Starwars expo : photos (cjed)
New photos from the Starwars expo have been added to the Photos section. As expected nothing really new (all videos, from movies and bonus, were on the DVD, and all objects exposed had little details).
We would have liked more animated scenes, like the one where Luke's X-Wing is disapearing in Dagobah (good reconstitution), or (at the end of the expo) the realtime video composition (blue) with various movies scenes at back. There was some cool Lego at the shop (at the exit) but prices were a joke (too high).

Ars Technica posted an exhaustive review of the Mac Pro. As expected it is the best machine (best performances&features/price ratio) under OSX and Windows. The only issue is the poor default graphic card compared with the global performance (requires a costing 350$ high end card in option).

08-12-06 / 03:17 PM : Apple 30% cheaper than Dell (cjed)
Macbidouille made a comparison between prices of a Dell high end configuration and Apple's new Mac Pro. The equivalent Mac Pro (Quad Xeon at 2500 euros TTC, that reaches 4500 euros with an ultimate Quadro FX4500 card, a 3 years warranty and Windows XP 64) is 30 % cheaper than Dell's (6000 euros TTC). And Dell machine doesn't include Firewire 800, nor digital audio I/O, nor hardware RAID feature.

As Apple WWDC completed some minutes ago, only some features of Leopard have been presented, to avoid copy from Microsoft said Apple. The direct attack uses slogans like "Hasta la vista, Vista" or "Introducing Vista 2.0". Leopard will finally ship in spring, 2007, just after Vista, to reduce the still evident stollen ideas.
