09-17-05 / 12:36 AM : Let's call her : special event (cjed)
Apple released the mpeg 4 HD video of the "special event" where the ipod nano was unveiled (as for the iphone, the Motorola ROKR, that comes with an integrated itunes player). As nothing happens without any reason, we discover that Steve Jobs counts within its friends, the famous Yo-yo Ma asian cello player (15 Grammy awards) and the singer Madonna, who he is chating with (ichat AV) during the show (release of her last album, and complete discography now available on ITMS).

Then, this was 45 minutes of pleasure with our "spiritual leader" :) In fact he is much more fun than a guy like Bill Gates (despite a difficult life - oprhelan, and recent rescue from a rare cancer). At this occasion i noticed that QT Player now hiddes in the "Properties" panel a tab named "Statistics", that displays graphics of the video rate (highs of 1000 kbits, and 500 kbits average, for a resolution of 640*360).

09-14-05 / 08:59 PM : Bill Gates last crazy affirmation (cjed)
The virgin like guy from the Silicon Valley made another crazy affirmation during the presentation of the interface from the upcoming Office 12 (that is trying copying Aqua) : "At any point in our history, we've had competitors who were better at doing something". And he continues : "we'll bring new things to it, do it better and integrate it in with other things...[]...in search, in music". What things is he speaking about, is this so hard to mention a sole one ?

09-11-05 / 08:41 PM : Broken Flowers (cjed)
This last movie featuring Bill Murray is a pain, there simply isn't any event in the story (the sole interest is that we can speak without disturbing...) In particular the music is close to non existent (boring, and only two songs), so no OST available. Here is a variation i made from the "best" one, from what i remember !

09-08-05 / 09:04 PM : To get rid of brushed metal (cjed)
Here is another mean to replace the "brushed metal" texture from Finder (and applications) windows by an intermediate between the later and the older from Jaguar. There is also other themes that bring the new elegant texture from Tiger (used in System Preferences for example), that gets rid from stripes and adopts a curved shape.
Whiteout

There is also a new version of Iridium theme.

09-07-05 / 11:46 PM : I may get 2 nano... (cjed)
... the white and the black ones : Apple just announced during a "special event" the successor of the ipod mini. The new iPod nano is, like rumors supposed, based on flash memory (2 and 4 Go models), that allows a thinner (pencil like) enclosure. Like the traditionnal iPod it brings a color display (photos compatible). Good luck to big fingers owners for mastering the click wheel !

09-06-05 / 12:07 AM : Kawai ES4 and MP8 (cjed)
Kawai, well known digital pianos maker (like Gem Promega), presents the ES4, a "portable" digital piano (20 kg, reduced size), that fits well in the previous ES3 and ES5 family. It offers 96 notes polyphony and its piano sound is warm and strong. The provided demos demonstrate great secondary sounds (electric piano, realistic rhythms with great drum sounds).
More expensive MP8 offers 192 notes polyphony, a brighter acoustic piano sound, fantastic brass sounds, a lovely acoustic guitar, a fine and expressive solo violin, deep strings, and also wonderful rhythms.

Yamaha introduced new flagship digital pianos, the P-140 and P-140S. They benefit from the awarded P250 "Dynamic stereo" technology, for a smaller size and a lower price (1499$). The demos show a soft piano sound, but static in some ways when switching velocity layers (3 samples per note). The included electric piano, harpsichord, vibes and bass sound great.s

09-04-05 / 08:37 PM : Unity : game creation tool (cjed)
OverTheEdge is the editor of a new game creation tool named Unity. This one is so nice (great UI) and powerful (particles, physics engine, character skin animation, scripting, workflow) that Apple wrote an article about it. Unity allows Windows and OSX deployment. A time limited demo is available.
We can even vote for a contest involving game oriented Dashboard Widgets made with this tool.

09-04-05 / 08:21 PM : x86 VS PPC / Linux VS OSX (cjed)
AnandTech publishes a very detailed and objective article that manage to explain differences between x86 and PPC platforms (in terms of performance, notably in the Intel transition perspective), and to provide some early explanations to performance gap between Linux and OSX on the same hardware, for specific tasks. Then we learn that Apple fixed a problem in the OSX networking code, where FreeBSD user threads where used in place of faster kernel threads (now used in Tiger). So Apple is aware of backwards inherited from the OSX multiple system layer architecture - however necessarily for compatibility purposes with Carbon, Cocoa and BSD (Mach task --> BSD task --> Carbon task).
