10-28-07 / 07:33 PM : Nightmare before christmas in 3D (cjed)
Publicis cinema (Champs Elysées) allows to watch a new version of Nightmare before Christmas, that has been completely reworked in 3D by Tim Burton (the original movie used the classic animation technique). Moreover the movie is screened using stereoscopic technique (two video sources and polarizing glasses). The result is exactly the same as the original movie, all textures have been recreated successfully in 3D. The stereoscopic view, despites being smooth, gives added depth in some scenes, but we can do better in that area.
In fact the effects are less strongs as in Shrek 3D, but the movie is also longer (full length. Usually stereoscopic movies are shorten to 20mn max, to limit eyes weak).

10-28-07 / 07:10 PM : Curse of the Golden Flower (cjed)
The DVD of Curse of the Golden Flower is available. However, as stated by ecranlarge.com, the video quality is not great, despites the 7,5 Gb space used (encoding problem at M6 Video or poor master used ? Fnac site however gives a max note - 5 - for the video !). The views are in someway blur, it doesn't cut (we are far from House of flying daggers DVD quality). Well, it is better than first Dune DVD :), but be assured to use a low res projector of small tv to smooth the defects.
There is still to compare this version with Blu-Ray and HD DVD ones.

Cuk.ch provides a deep analysis of Time Machine, and explains why it is really revolutionnary. Apple succeeded to resolve well known very hard problematics.
This article is derived from a very detailed presentation (4 pages) of Time Machine, provided by Apple Insider.
We indeed remember Microsoft problems with WinFS (also database based filesystem), that had to be removed from Vista, that is such features are complex. We can read a thesis about an equivalent principle as Time Machine, even in a UI point of view (Time Machine navigation through timeline is however far more advanced).

It seems it isn't from lack of support from Apple, as Steve Jobs himself asked its developper relations team to get on the thing. 10-02-07 / 08:53 PM : Naked Objects 3 : like WebObjects/DirectToWeb ? (cjed)
TSS provides an article about Naked Objects 3.0, a new framework that allows applications generation (rich client or flat HTML) from an object model. The announced particularity is that it doesn't use a controller object contrary to MVC frameworks (Struts, etc.) Actions are triggered directly and only on model objects (POJO).
Well, it is funny, as it is presented as revolutionnary. And what about WebObject and its DirectToWeb generator ? It has been here from close to 15 years. And WO is far more rich (real components framework with a large UI components library that has been tested from a decade, and whose concepts inspired Tapestry) ! We can even read in this interesting interview at JSFCentral about Exadel/Ajax4JSF an honnest answer :
M: Some would argue that WebObjects, Tapestry, and ASP.NET introduced component-oriented web development first. Do you think JSF offers anything different than these frameworks?
MK: I wouldn't argue otherwise. I believe JSF builds on a lot of features from these frameworks such as component web development and Tapestry-like features with the Facelets extension. There are a few areas where JSF provides even more. For example, it's an open standard, which is very important

Then WO would have had a sole problem, it wasn't standard. Well, neither Struts nor Hibernate followed specs at start (there is now JPA for Hibernate, in fact JPA spec took ideas from Hibernate...), they grew to de facto strandard...
JSF also hides the controller, POJO attributes and methods are referenced directly in the JSF tags attributes (objects are injected through IOC). Then these two frameworks yet hide HTTP (they generate particular links when tags rendering occurs, in order to persist the components model on the server. In .NET it is somewhat the same, with a huge encoded string/HTTP parameter that drives the WebForms components state).

For those who wouldn't know about Apple Guidelines (appeared in eighties...), they are recommandations for UI design : elements position and size, normed spaces, etc. That is all that is missing in Windows applications, and that played a high role in Apple success. For the iPhone the constraints are even more important, due to reduced view port, and so the guidelines can be even more useful.
