02-28-06 / 11:30 PM : Mac mini Intel / ipod hifi (cjed)
The main news today is Apple shipping the Intel Mac Mini. Very powerful, it however does not fit well for games due to the Intel integrated video chipset (G950, 64 Mo memory taken from main memory, slower). About the ipod hifi, in fact a dock for ipod (accepts all dockable models, or the first ipod model through an audio input), Apple does not mention the RMS power, nor the harmonic distorsion. The frequency range is also tiny in high range. For 379 euros, we can find better in the same price range, for example Behringer monitors (175 euros each) on Playback.

02-20-06 / 10:49 PM : M-Audio ProKeys88 SX demos (cjed)
M-Audio provides some demos of its first digital piano. It is here. As with the master controllers of the maker (not good rated), the past exprience in audio cards does not mean success in other areas. So Roland and others have nothing to fear for now, even if the new M-Audio is far more cheaper (499$).

02-18-06 / 04:53 PM : Philip K. Dick : Out in the garden (cjed)
Expecting few from a new Philip K. Dick novels compilation, because these included here are not famous, i however crossed the line and started reading it. Dans le jardin presents some not so good ones, but three at last are great : indeed Out in the garden, Beyond the door, or Whitered apples are close to Edgar Poe's absurd/horror style, and are somehow terrifiying.

02-18-06 / 03:45 PM : The Battle of Corrin (cjed)
Last chapter of Before Dune serie, brings back life to the last book (The Butlerian Jihad), that could sometimes be boring due to long military tactical descriptions. As usual, there is multiple plots and key events, and always this fluent writting. We are putting high hopes in the next serie, After Dune, planned by the authors. After having written these 6 big novels in no more than 5 years, perhaps the wait will not be too long. I discovered in The Battle of Corrin what i belive to be a clue about the ulimate "fear" mentionned in Chapterhouse, the last chaper of the original Dune cycle.

02-18-06 / 02:10 PM : Silverbeg : Dying Inside (cjed)
I'm a bit late in reviewing the books i read the last months. So start with Robert Silverberg's Dying Inside. This is not SF, no more Fanstatic as the author is so much talented. The book is very bound to psychedelic trips of seventies, the time it was written indeed. Through flashbacks, the main character remembers its flaws caused by its uncommon skill, that is to be able to guess what people think. Sometimes it could remind Le Horla, however it is less dark, more funny, and surprinsingly harder. As usual with the author, it is very original and very well written, to a point it could put "classics" to shame.

02-15-06 / 12:59 AM : OSx86 10.4.4 Security Broken (cjed)
Few weeks after the shippment of first public MacIntel, the now famous OSX86Project site reports the existence of a preliminary patch allowing installation of OSX 10.4.4 on regular PC fitted with SSE2 technology. Despite system code obfuscation, Apple might not have put so much efforts (probably with some reasons) to avoid this manipulation, since the previous Intel version of MacOSX. That is a "good thing" !

Expected next summer as an universal binary application, the game The Movies (from Lionhead Studios and ported to Mac by Feral Interactive) intends to allow to manage a movies studio : creation, scenario, script, technology, casting, etc. I suspect it will be great, and it suits perfectly with my last book upon G. Lucas (L'homme derrière le mythe).
This is here... and there.

And the final word : "Russian doctors believe there is a risk of psychic troubles when crew members will no be able to see Earth again, as it never happened". So, another Doom 3 scenario (or more realistic Mission to Mars like) ? :)s

02-07-06 / 10:49 PM : Undercover : bad news for thieves (cjed)
The shareware Undercover fills a new need, the tracking of macs in order to trace stolen mac units. Once registered, the unique id is sent by the installed program each 6 mn, to a server that holds a database of stolen macs (you have to say them when it happens, and have stored your id). At this time the server will send a mail to prevent you, and moreover will be able to simulate a hardware failure on the stolen mac, by fading the screen to black. Better than that, it can also send a video taken from the stolen mac isight cam !
Explantations are here. Hoax or not, virus or not ? Whatever, the site claims that the program cannot be removed by the thief if you password protected the mac firmware. It is that reinstalling the system does not delete the spy program, wich would say that it is located in disk driver area or firmware ?

02-01-06 / 11:28 PM : TNT Basic : make old sprites like games (cjed)
TNT Basic is an opensource game creation environment. It provides numerous functions aimed at managing sprites (collisions detection, etc.), a consequent documentation (also includes tutorials). The goal is to touch base principles of arcade programming, so examples are simples, you will not create an OpenGL screen saver (it does not manage that whatsoever). It is here.
